We want to “fall in love” because we deep down we need someone who will accept us wholly, love us completely, choose us, and never want to change their mind. We want the security of steadfast affections and the support of their strength. Enduring patience, undying faithfulness. We want those moments we could only share with someone we trust and who knows us so well. Someone who believes you’re worth it and who’s worthy of your whole heart. The one whose name makes your heart race at every mention of it. They’re there when you need them and you know they always will be. Nothing is too much when it comes to declaring their love for you. And you would do anything for them, too.

We make the mistake of looking to another fallen human being and longing, expecting to find this in them. God designed us for intimacy like that, but if we haven’t found that in Him, our search for it will never end. We discover real acceptance, the most perfect love in God.

Jesus was the ultimate example of what true love looks like. Selfless, humble, sacrificing, painful, powerful, stronger than death. It’s more than an experience we long for, or a dream of something beautiful. It’s messy, it’s not what we deserve, it’s a gift, it takes faith, it’s by grace that makes you thankful beyond words to receive. We don’t fall into love like it’s by chance, or stroke of luck. He chooses you because of Who He is. He draws you to Himself. He loves you first. And then you begin to get to know Who love is and be changed by that perfect love you’ve always desired in the most beautiful ways.

We find our hopes fulfilled in Christ.
